I blame Drizzt. He was the one who made me discover the cave. Y’know, the cave where I found these ranger attire and the twin swords. I followed him, as he was always a very good tracker with that keen nose of his, and he clambered lithely across the rocks and into this small cave where a skeleton was lying, propped up on a lone slab of rock, right under the cave roof’s opening so sunlight streamed it as though lit on a stage. You think that only happens in dramatic stories? Well, actually, you’re right. The skeleton was actually molding in a corner. Poor fellow. Must have gotten on the wrong side of an orc raiding party. Anyway, I mumbled a few prayers, got his gear and walked out, patting Drizzt as I did.
Drizzt was my dog and he died a few days later, of gangrene. I miss that dog.
When my parents saw what I had in hand, they up and cried, lamenting about how their son will now leave them for the wild, unknown world. And I really can’t fault them. I’ve been wanting to get out of the little mudhole I’ve been in for 20 years now and I feel that my discovering the poor sod’s clothes and gear was a sign from my personal god that my destiny is not to plow my pa’s fields until I die of sunstroke. So I told them I’m gonna leave and that when I come back I will have a chestload of shiny things that’ll set them for life.
That was three months ago, and now, I’m at this town, working as a bodyguard for some elven nun. Oh gods, I hope this is not my destiny…
